For Laurie Allman

The way she writes of Minnesota
Is how I would like to write my life:
Sparse and clear – a rich, wild landscape.

Her book sits grey in my hands,
A treasure – the weight just right,
Type-face wisely chosen, paper textured,
So even an eagle might soar
Above it and scribe its story.

On Lake Superior
The waves swell onto a shoreline,
Each one etched from a
Vision mirrored in clear fresh water
Through which, from her canoe,
She sees rocks shimmering forty feet below.

You could drown in the reflection
Of this vast, teeming ecology.
